What can individual therapy help with?
People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Some arrive at a clear crisis point - a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, a loss of direction. Others come with something harder to name: a persistent feeling that something isn't right, or that they keep finding themselves in the same patterns without understanding why.
Whatever brings you here, individual therapy offers a space to slow down, look inward, and begin to make sense of things. Some of the areas Derrick works with most often include:
-
Anxiety and worry — persistent anxiety, panic, or a constant sense of unease
-
Depression and low mood — feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, or disconnection
-
Life transitions — divorce, bereavement, redundancy, retirement, or a change in identity
-
Relationship difficulties — patterns in relationships that feel hard to break
-
Low self-esteem — self-criticism, people-pleasing, or difficulty setting boundaries
-
Addiction and compulsive behaviour — alcohol, drugs, gambling, or other dependencies
-
Stress and burnout — work pressure, exhaustion, or feeling unable to cope
-
Trauma — past experiences that continue to affect how you feel and function today

How does individual therapy work?
Individual therapy is a collaborative process — there's no fixed script or one-size-fits-all approach. I work integratively, meaning I draw on a range of therapeutic models depending on what's most useful for each person and what emerges in the work.
Sessions typically begin by exploring what's brought you to therapy and what you'd like to be different. From there, the work develops at your pace — looking at present difficulties, understanding their roots, and finding new ways of relating to yourself and others.
Most people find that even the early sessions bring some relief — simply having a dedicated space to talk, without judgement, can feel significant. Over time, the work tends to go deeper, and the changes become more lasting.
Sessions are available in person at my practice in St Albans, or online via Google Meet.
Why choose us?

A personalised approach
No two people are the same, and neither is the work. I tailor every course of therapy to the individual — drawing on different approaches depending on what's most useful for you and what emerges as the work develops.

No waiting lists
As a private therapist, I can usually offer appointments quickly — without the long waits associated with NHS or workplace referrals. If you're ready to start, getting seen promptly is rarely an obstacle.

Free initial consultation
Individual clients are offered a free initial consultation — a relaxed, no-commitment conversation to talk through what's brought you to therapy and whether working with me feels like the right fit.
About
Meet Derrick, Your Therapist
I'm an experienced, qualified integrative psychotherapist and Level 7 counsellor, fully registered with both BACP and UKCP. Alongside my core training, I've completed a Level 5 COSRT Accredited course in Relationship Therapy with The Grove Practice, and have a particular interest in working with couples navigating relationship difficulties.
For individual therapy, I draw on that same integrative, relational approach to work with a wide range of issues — including addiction, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, people-pleasing (codependency), and anger management, as well as life transitions such as divorce, bereavement, or redundancy.
Clients describe me as friendly, empathic, and thoughtful — someone who creates a space where it feels genuinely safe to talk.
